CT v Thameside Tigers Juniors (TTJ) 25/06/11

First Half: Cheadle were in control of the match from the start. The team kept hold of the ball, made a lot of chances, took at lot of shots and to begin with had a lot of near misses! Finally, after 3 minutes of groans from the supporters bench as the ball failed to find the basket , Tom clocked the first 2 points of the match..

From then, CT took their shots with more confidence, largely over the heads of the younger, shorter Thameside team. TTJ only slowed the Cheadle scoring when their fast #28 got hold of the ball. Half Time Score: CT 18: TTJ 1.

Second Half:

After the first five minutes, when their #25 made an excellent basket,  the Juniors looked tired and their defence looked ragged against good runs by Joe and Sean. Their coach's warning not to try passing over the heads of the much taller CT players was a good call, but they found it hard to find alternatives.

CT racked up the score as Karl marked  #28 closely, keeping him out of the game and looking very frustrated. Without him, TTJ found it hard to get hold of the ball and keep it long enough to pose a threat. Cheadle's defence only relaxed at the very end, letting TTJ #15 make the final basket.

Final Score:  CT - 44: TTJ - 5

Pros and Cons:

Defensively, CT were much improved since last week. Marking #28 neutralised the main threat and allowed the team to play their game.

Cheadle made a slow opening to the game - another opponent could have taking the lead decisively in the first few minutes. Though there were a lot of good shots in the game, there were quite a few that were inaccurate or sloppy. Against a better (or bigger) opponent those missed shots might be decisive.

TTJ are short, it's a big disadvantage. Cheadle have been there, and done that, and still have last year's T-shirt - only now it doesn't fit! Kudos to CT for taking full advantage of their height - enjoy it while it lasts.

Highlights:

I like seeing penalty shots in pairs, and Matt A looked cool making his. Good to see you back, Matt, and try not to scratch.

CT v Dynamic Allstars 18/6/2011

First Half: Cheadle made a sharp start and quickly went into the lead with Matt A on top form.

But then CT relaxed and let the Allstars back into the game - their #2 seemed to be able to go where he wanted on the court, and he wanted to go to the basket and score, walking through a sleepy CT defense. It looked like the DAs were getting back into the game with the score at 13:10.

CT pulled back when, after the refs didn't allow a basket, Sean  went on the rampage and made 3 in a row to bring the half time score to 19:10.

Second Half:  DA came out fighting  and and again manage to make points against a Cheadle defense that was often laid-back and careless -  "Wake up" cries were coming from the rowdy element on the supporters bench.

But CT kept well ahead with Joe getting his class act together towards the end to boost the final score to 34:20.


Pros and Cons: Yes, it was a fairly easy win for CT, but DA are a new team and should have been struggling to get into double figures.

CT all played well in attack with good passing and co-ordinated plays that often left DA behind. But the team was lazy in defense. And DA's #2 should have been isolated - when he got near the basket he scored.

DA are an agressive team and most of them have good ball skills. They easily exploited openings in CT defense. But they're new and they're not playing a team game yet. When they start to do that, we might get a nasty surprise.Watch out for #2, (tall slim kid with fair hair - numbers may change).

Funniest moment: The dazed look on Karl's face when DA #10 nutmegged him. "Where did dat ball go?" Look behind you, Karl!

Commiserations: to Matt F. Chicken pox is no joke. He'll be itching to get back.

And a Clarke Kent Award to Josh for his flying leap towards the end of the game. Ouch.

DA: #2 - 10; #5 - 4; #1 - 4; #10 - 2.

Why have a Cheadle Thunder Blog?

• First of all, to let everyone who didn't see the match know how it went, and keep them up to date.
• Second, to keep a record of the teams we've played. Who are their best players? What are their weak points?
• Last, but not least, so that Team and parents can give their comments about the game too.  

There are probably a lot of other things we could do on the blog. Let me know your ideas.


Who can use the blog?

At the moment I'm keeping the blog fairly private. Anyone can read the blog on-line. Only people I've invited can post or comment.

Parents, if your kid has his own email address (or if you want invites for friends or family) let me know their email and I'll send a link so that they can join up.

Lads, I'm not going to make up a load of rules for commenting. Just remember that anyone else can see what you've written and that anything written using your log-in is your responsibility. Anything that I think is a foul will get deleted. 5 fouls and you're out, and the ref's decision is final!
