CT v. Thameside Tigers Juniors 24/09/11

Tom and I couldn't make the game this week, so just a quick report (with thanks to Andy for the run-down – sounds like we missed a good match).

CT played exceptionally well, especially in defence; Matt F , in particular, was in the right place, keeping a cool head and showing some excellent moves. In attack, Sean and Joe made most points, with Joe scoring a 3 point shot 7 minutes from the end.

Sol was injured in the last 4 minutes after a head on collision. (Having seen the “super-collider” speed Sol goes at, I imagine this was pretty spectacular – hope you're now fit and ready for the play-off, Sol).

Final Score: 54-12 to Cheadle

Stats:
Shaun 20, Joe 14, Harry 6, Josh 5, Sol, Matt F, Karl all 2. (Thanks to Dave Ads. for the info update)
Man of the Match: goes to Harry for three well shot baskets. Go H!

Coach's Advice: The team needs to drive closer to the basket in order to raise their hit percentage and force fouls from the opponents. (I seem to think I've heard this from Andy few times before, lads...Thameside Tigers used this tactic effectively against Cheadle 2 weeks ago so we know how it piles the pressure on. Why not let them have some of their own medicine?)

P.S. I've now changed the settings on the blog so that anyone can post a comment instead of almost nobody. If you still can't comment let me know. Anyone trying to sell me anything will be banned!

CT v Dynamic Allstars 17/09/11 2:20

First Half:

Cheadle launched a blistering attack from the outset. Joe made a smart first basket within 30 seconds of the tip-off, with Sean making the second less than a minute later. At first All-Stars didn't offer more than a sluggish response. They couldn't keep possession of the ball, which swiftly found its way back to Joe and into the poorly defended net. After just 5 minutes CT had 10 points.

After a time-out All-Stars did get their game back together enough to slow the Cheadle scoring rate a bit and take a few shots, one of which gave them their first 2 points in the 18th minute. But they must have been wincing as they looked at the half-time scoreboard.
Half-time score: CT - 18; DA - 2.

Second Half:

DA, obviously demoralised, offered only token resistance in the second half. CT piled up the points steadily with baskets from every player.

In the last 3 minutes even the token resistance collapsed. Joe may have thought he would get a last basket with just 30 seconds left of the game, and when Sol took the score to 50 with 10 seconds left he must have thought the same. But no! Just before the whistle Matt A put Cheadle 50 points ahead.
Final score: CT - 52; DA - 2.

Stats:
CT: Joe - 20; Sean - 10; Matts (A&F) - 6 each; Tom, Sol - 4 each; Dan - 2.
DA: #16 - 2.

Pros and Cons:

Obviously a good match for Cheadle who seem to have come a long way since they last played DA in June, and won 34-20. What's changed?

The thing I noticed most was how fast Cheadle looked, repeatedly sending the ball back up the court with a couple of fast passes to an undefended basket. DA, in comparison, made hard work of getting the ball down the court, giving Cheadle plenty of opportunities to get it back - and this time Cheadle was eager to get it back.

Highlights:
*Joe - Man of the Match by most reckoning for a great show with 20 points, including sweet free throws at the end of the first half, but Coach gives the award to Dan for excellent defensive play - DA weren't held to 2 points without it.

*Watching a DA player just give up trying to do an adequate throw-in and just throw the ball up in the air at random instead. Obviously having Tom's face just millimetres away from you can be very scary.

*Sol - In theory if you could travel faster than light you could be in two places at once. Probably best not to try it on the basketball court, but it was a spectacular attempt!

New Fixtures

17th September 2:20 - Dynamic Allstars on court 2

24th September 2:20 - Thameside Tiger Jrs on court 2

1st October : Play offs from 2:20. Keep the afternoon free, we're going all the way!

CT v. Thameside Tigers.

First Half:

A lazy opening from Cheadle. Tigers, fronted by their mobile #14, were in the attack, scoring 3 points in the first 5 minutes while CT only managed to accumulate defensive fouls. After 10 minutes, and a time-out,  CT finally got into the game with baskets from Joe and Josh. But before the end of the half Cheadle had 9 fouls on the clock. It was only Tiger's inaccurate shooting that stopped them going into the lead at the end of the half.

Half-time score: 6 -6

Second Half:

Cheadle started well, with bold baskets from Sean (despite having chalked up 4 fouls) and from Joe. Again it was Thameside's #14 who lead their fight-back, aiming to draw further fouls by his direct attacking play. But Cheadle, wary by now, avoided losing any players, finishing the game with a swift run of baskets against a tiring Thameside.

Final Score: 26 - 12 to Cheadle.

Stats:  (warning! these don't add up or even get anywhere near  - I've got the excuse that I was using the scoring machine at the same time as writing)

CT: Joe - 6; Josh, Karl, Sol - 4 each; Karl - 2 ; Someone else - 6
TT: #14 - 9; #25, #55 - 2 each.

Pros and Cons
CT made a lack-lustre start, but didn't get disheartened and worked their way back into the game. Well done.
TT's tactics, driving to draw out defensive fouls and get Cheadle players sent off, didn't work - but only just didn't. It was effective. Why not serve them up some of the same next time.

Man of the Match
Has got to be TT's #14. Scored a lot of points, drew a lot of fouls, and was generally to be feared when he got hold of the ball. A menace. Needs to be stopped.

Apologies for no report on the game against NR Stealers on 3rd of September. I couldn't make it and Tom was away visiting family. I hear we won.
